DR. Md. Younus -Receive the Nobel Prize

DR. MD. YOUNUS

Introduction: Dr. Md. Younus is one of the greatest sons of this land. He is the first Bangladeshi to receive the Nobel Prize.

Birth: Dr. Md. Younus was born on June 28, 1940, at Village: Bathua, Upazilla: Hathazari, District: Chittagong. His father’s name was Haji Dula Meah Sowdagar and mother’s was Sufia Khatun.

Education: Dr. Md. Younus started his primary education at Mohajan Fakirer School, Bathua, which was near his village home. Later his family transferred to Chittagong town and he completed his primary education at Lama Bazar Primary School, Khatungonj. He received his secondary education in a famous school of Chittagong town named Collegiate School, Chittagong. He passed the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination form Chittagong College. Then he got admitted into Dhaka University and received his B.A. and M. A. degrees in Economics. Then he received Ph. D. in Economics at Vanderbilt University, U.S.A. under Fulbright Scholarship.

Professional Career: After receiving his Ph. D. degree, he joined Tennesy State University as a teacher. He worked there for sometime. Then he returned home and was appointed as an Associate Professor of the Department of Economics in the University of Chittagong in 1972. He started the Grameen Bank Project in 1976. The project was operated under Bangladesh Krishi Bank. In 1983, he started an indeperdent organization named Grameen Bank. At present, he is the Managing Director of Grameen Bank.

Awards: He received numerous awards for his contribution in the fields of poverty reduction and restoring peace. Some of the awarda are Nobel Prize in Peace (2006), Seul Peace Award (2006), Magsese Award, Ganadhi Award, and Ekushey Award.

Achievements: Among the numerous contributions and achievements of Dr. Md. Younus, some of the most striking ones are giver below.
1.      He has practically implemented the theory of welfare economics.
2.    He has shown how the credit facility can be extended to the impoverished part of the society without any security deposit.
3.     He has paid a great contribution in the field of empowerment of women, which has played a pivotal role in ensuring gender equality.
4.    His activities have contributed in socio-economic development from the lower level.
5.     He has set a model of micro credit system for the whole world. Now Grameen Bank model has been implemented in almost every country of the world.
6.    No lasting peace can be achieved if we cannot remove poverty from the society. He has significant contribution in removing poverty in Bangladesh. He has shown how a poor people can work for the development of this country.
7.     He has contribution in ensuring human rights and safeguarding democracy thought his activities.
                                                                

Conclusion: Dr. Md. Younus is always dedicated for the peace and prosperity of the country. During our war of independence, he worded for the independence of Bangladesh in the U.S.A. by forming public opinion. He has also actively come forward to serving the country in different critical moments by trying to create public opinion towards solving the problems besides his war against poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition. We should also try to be responsible citizens of the country and devote ourselves for the development of the country.
